BRADLEY BOLZON, PhD
Chairman, Versant Ventures
 Brad Bolzon brings more than thirteen years of global pharmaceutical industry experience to Versant’s biotech investment team. He specializes in early stage biotech investing with a particular emphasis on new company start-ups.
Prior to joining Versant, Brad served as Executive Vice President, Global Head of Business Development, Licensing & Alliances with Roche. Under his leadership, Roche’s Pharmaceuticals Division established alliances with over 75 biotech companies worldwide and significantly strengthened the company’s product pipeline. Previously, Brad held executive roles at Eli Lilly and Company in drug discovery, business development, clinical research, and regulatory affairs.
Brad also serves as a board member for Amira Pharmaceuticals, Antipodean Pharmaceuticals, Sentient Pharmaceuticals, Speedel, Metabolex and is Chairman of Versant EuroVentures, a wholly-owned start-up incubator of Versant Ventures.
Brad received Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science degrees in Pharmacology from the University of Toronto and conducted his post-doctoral research training at the Ottawa Heart Institute in Ottawa, Canada.
IAN MASSEY, DPhil
Synosia Therapeutics
 Ian Massey has experience in all phases of drug discovery and development. Until recently, he was the Senior Vice President and Head of Research and Preclinical Development at Roche Palo Alto.
From 1995 to 2002, Ian held positions of increasing responsibility at Roche Bioscience including Senior Vice President, Head of Neurobiology Business Unit and Central Research & Development and Vice President and Director of Preclinical Research and Development.
Before joining Roche, Ian was at Syntex Research for over 15 years where he held a number of senior positions, culminating in the position of Vice President and Director, Institute of Analytical Research. He has a D. Phil. degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Oxford, England, an M.A. in Organic/Natural Product Chemistry and a B.A. in Chemistry.
ANDREW SCHWAB, BS
5AM Ventures
 Before founding 5AM Ventures in 2002, Andy was a Principal at Bay City Capital (BCC) where he led many of the firm's investment and merchant banking activities for such companies as Cubist, Lombard Odier, Metabolex, PTC Therapeutics, Symyx, and Syrrx.
Prior to BCC, Andy was Vice President of Business Development at Digital Gene Technologies and a Vice President in the life science investment banking group of Montgomery Securities.
He serves on the Board of Directors of Aravis Venture I, Genospectra, Ikaria, Ilypsa, Miikana Therapeutics, Smart Drug Systems, and the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Technology Validation Advisory Board.
Andy received a BS with honors in Genetics and Ethics from Davidson College. Andy is based in the San Francisco office.
HEATH LUKATCH, PhD
Novo A/S
 Heath has extensive experience investing in healthcare. He opened Novo Ventures’ San Francisco office in 2006, was a founding partner of SightLine Partners, and Managing Director and Head of Biotechnology Venture Investments at Piper Jaffray Ventures. Heath has invested in multiple biotechnology and medical device companies and currently serves as a Director at Synosia, Inogen and NeuroTherapeutics.
Prior to his involvement in venture capital, Heath worked as a strategy consultant with McKinsey & Company, serving a range of large and small healthcare clients. Previously, he was founder and CEO of AutoMate Scientific, a San Francisco-based company specialising in biotechnology instrumentation. He has also worked as a bench scientist at Chiron, Cetus and Roche Bioscience in molecular biology, protein chemistry and electrophysiology.
Heath earned his PhD in Neuroscience from Stanford University and his undergraduate degree with high honors in Biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley.
GÖSTA JONSSON, MD, PhD
Scientific Advisor, Investor Growth Capital
 Gösta Jonsson is an independent Scientific Advisor to Investor Growth Capital, the venture capital arm of Investor AB, which is the largest listed industrial holding company in northern Europe. In addition he is a board member of several Swedish Biotech companies.
From 1988 – 2006 Gösta held senior positions in Research and Development at Astra, which became AstraZeneca, gaining broad experience in all phases of drug discovery and development, particularly in the therapeutic areas of psychiatry and neurology.
Before joining AstraZeneca Gösta held the position of Associate Professor at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, from which he received his PhD in 1967 and MD in 1971 from the department of neuroscience.
Since retiring in 2006 Gösta has served as a consultant to venture capitalists, start-up pharma and biotech companies. Gösta brings with him a breadth of experience from both his academic and industrial research gained over 40 years.
JEAN-PHILIPPE TRIPLET, CFA
Managing Partner and Founder, Aravis Venture
 Jean-Philippe Tripet, CFA, is Managing Partner and founder of Aravis Venture a Swiss based venture capital firm focusing on investments in biotechnology and energy companies. Prior to founding Aravis he was an Executive Vice-President at Lombard Odier & Cie, Geneva and a member of the Group Executive Committee of the bank. He was awarded the best European fund manager’s 5 years performance award, all categories equity, in 2001.
During his career Jean Philippe has performed over 90 investments in private companies in the USA, Europe and Asia, many as lead investor. Since 1988 he has worked in numerous financial positions as an international bank executive, private equity investor, portfolio manager and as a financial analyst. He was particularly active in seeding some of the most successful Swiss companies such as Glycart, Cytos, Isotis, Esbatech, Evolva and Novimmune.
Jean-Philippe sits on the board of directors of seven companies in Europe (Telormedix, Evolva, Symetis, Synosia), Asia (S Bio, Merlion) and USA (Omeros). He is also a director of the Fondation Fournier Majoie pour l’Innovation in Bruxelles.
He has a degree in business administration from the University of Geneva, did graduates studies in finance in San Diego, California and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
RALF ROSENOW
Partner, Blum & Grob Attorney at Law
 Ralf Rosenow is a partner at Blum & Grob Attorney at Law, a well-known and highly respected Swiss law firm based in Zurich.
An experienced lawyer, Ralf’s specialist practice areas cover the Securities and Capital Markets and Corporate Law for Life Science, Start-up’s and Small to Medium-sized businesses. With a career spanning nearly twenty years Ralf has held previous positions as an Associate or Partner in four law firms based in both Switzerland and the UK.
Ralf is a member of the Zurich Bar Association and the Swiss Bar Association, the Licensing Executive Society, Swiss Pharma Licensing Group, Swiss Private Equity and Corporate Finance Association and is Vice President of the Sport Court of the Swiss Swimming Association. He has admission in all Swiss Courts and is a recognised representative (listing agent) of SIX Swiss Exchange.
Educated at the University of Zurich, Ralf gained his admission to the Bar in Switzerland in 1989.
GUIDO MAGNI, MD, PhD
Managing Director, Versant EuroVentures
 Prior to joining Versant EuroVentures, the incubator company of Versant, Guido held leadership positions at Roche and Wyeth-Ayerst.
During a 15-year career at Roche, he served for 12 years as Global Head of Medical Science in Global Drug Development in Basel, playing a significant role in the function's achievements in recent years, overseeing six therapeutic areas and 900 people across four sites. He helped to define the global development strategy for each compound in the Roche portfolio and was closely involved in a number of Roche acquisitions and mergers including Syntex and Boehringer-Mannheim. At Wyeth-Ayerst, he served as a CNS senior project director in clinical development based in Paris.
Before joining the pharmaceutical industry, Guido held a number of academic positions, including Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Contract Professor of Psychopharmacotherapy at the University of Padua, Italy. He is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed papers.
HARRY WELTEN, MBA
Senior VP & CFO, Arpida
 Harry Welten has more than 20 years of international senior executive experience. Since August 2001, he has acted as the Chief Financial Officer of Arpida AG, a SIX Swiss Exchange listed company that focuses on novel products for the treatment of microbial infections.
Prior to joining Arpida, he was a director at UBS Warburg in New York following various senior positions within the UBS Group. Before joining UBS, he was with ABB and DaimlerChrysler.
Harry holds a degree in banking and finance, a degree in economics and business administration and an MBA (Hons.) from Columbia University, New York.
GENGHIS LLOYD-HARRIS, MD, PhD, MBA
Partner, Abingworth
 Genghis Lloyd-Harris joined Abingworth, the life science venture capital investors in 2004 where he focuses on exits of Abingworth’s venture investments via mergers and acquisitions and IPOs as well as venture investment in the UK and Continental Europe. Prior to this appointment he was a Managing Director of Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) in the European Equity Research Group, based in London.
Genghis was responsible for coverage of the European biotechnology industry and was ranked first for Pan-European Biotechnology in the Institutional Investor surveys each year from 2001 to 2003. Before joining Equity Research at CSFB, he worked for CSFB's Health Care Group in the Investment Banking Division in New York.
Current and past directorships have included HBI, Novexel, Solexa and Synosia Therapeutics. Genghis holds a Medical Degree from the University of Liverpool in the UK, a PhD in Clinical Pharmacology from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He was previously a paediatrician in Melbourne, Australia.
