Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is one of the most common, yet under-diagnosed, neurological disorders. According to recent figures published in a number of journals, including Movement Disorders, in its more severe forms the condition affects an estimated 2.5% of the population in the US and Europe and can cause symptoms that impact on the quality of life of 6 to 11% of the general population.
A chronic disease, such as RLS is most frequently diagnosed in patients of middle to older age. Symptoms include the urge to move the legs, usually accompanied by an unpleasant sensation, which worsens during periods of rest or inactivity. The sensations range in severity from uncomfortable to irritating to painful.
RLS can lead to severe sleep disruption and result in daytime sleepiness and a significant impairment of quality of life.
